Happy National Running Day

June 1st, is National Running Day.

Race Director Tony Talley has decided to do the Eagle race again this year, but it will be in the fall, October 2nd[oops, it's Saturday the 1st]  12k, 5k, and 1 mile.  Club members... please... we need volunteers.

Greenville Track Club made the Guinness Book of World Records, 100 solo 5k's in just over 30 hours:  [here].

Spring isn't officially over yet, but I've already chosen my nominee for Oconee Runner of the Year (if we had one).  Sadie Mae Addis, the former 25 week preemie who toddled through the fun run named for her, a highlight of this year's Foothills 5k.  [here]   (I swiped the picture of her from JuJuGrafiks.com)

The Foothills 5k had 287 finishers, plus the 1 mile, and a lot of no-show registrants adding up to some 350 "participants".  Somebody might correct me, but that may be the biggest foot race in Oconee history.

I guess if you have a kid in high school sports you might already know this, but it was news to me: you can watch state level High School finals/championship coverage streamed online at the South Carolina High School League website, http://www.schsl.tv/  Archives go back to late '98, and all sports seem to be covered, including chorus.

A story on the state High School track championships was in the May 17th Seneca Journal.  Seneca girls 2nd, Daniel girls 4th.  Daniel boys 3rd, including two gold medals for 1600 and 3200m runner Andre Ivankovic.  400m gold for Walhalla's Adrian Caron.  Watch online at the aforementioned SCHSL website.

Andre Ivankovic followed up on those two gold medals by helping Greenville Track Club make the Guinness Book, and then winning the Seneca Fest 5k, leaving Gary Ball (a.k.a. "that guy from Brevard who comes down here and wins all our races") to settle for 2nd.

(Gary Ball is cool, we're glad he comes to Oconee races.  I guess.)

At the SEC Outdoor Track & Field championships, some gal from LSU beat Lakya Brookins in the 100m, by 1/100th of a second.  [here]  Nonetheless,  the former Seneca Bobcat Brookins is the SEC 60m champ, and is going to the NCAA Championships June 8-11th.

Mixed results for Clemson at the NCAA regionals. They qualified 17 individuals and three relay teams for the national championships [here]  but their star distance runner, Kim Ruck, faded after leading the first 15 laps of the 10,000m. [here]  All American Stormy Kendrick was injured in a 100m prelim.  [here]

The next general meeting will be September 10th at the Terry residence.  It will be a social meeting, not much business... food, swimming pool, kids running around, and maybe some adults jogging up and down the road.  More details and arrangements as the date nears.

Happy running, jogging, walking, toddling.
